Hello, I’m Phoebe. I’m 22 and just finished doing my master’s at the end of May this year. I have a deep passion for learning about the laws that govern the universe, and trying to wrap my head around the intricacy of it all. I also adore nurturing this curiosity in others, which is why I have decided to become a tutor in maths and physics, before I apply for a PhD.
I create engaging, interactive lessons on my iPad that the student and I go through during the lesson. I gradually build up to more challenging concepts, ensuring that the student doesn’t feel overwhelmed. I focus on helping them understand the meaning behind the maths, rather than mindlessly following an algorithm. This approach is central to my philosophy of how to make learning enjoyable. I’m completely flexible on what topics will be covered in the lessons, with the default option being all topics on the student’s school syllabus.
I have been doing private tutoring since the start of September. I have experience teaching physics A Level, and maths from primary to A Level. I have one GCSE maths student who I am introducing A level topics to, so I am comfortable both with being a support to school work, and also with teaching new topics from scratch.
I also currently work at a maths learning centre. In order to get this role I completed a training course where I was taught how to break down problems in a way that’s intuitive for young children. I also learnt engaging teaching methods, such as Socratic questioning, which encourages the student to become more aware of their own thought processes. Although these methods came naturally to me, the training heightened my awareness of my techniques, boosting my confidence in my teaching.
