From my experience as a football coach, I understand the importance of teaching in different styles - be it visual, verbal, or hands-on. Lessons should be enjoyable, and my enthusiasm for the subject should only help this. It is equally important that I listen to students, and I will do my best to tailor lessons to their preferred styles and interests. I intend that my lessons take on an informal feel - I was only in their position a few years ago! As I have recent experience of school, I hope that I can help bridge the gap between a teacher's and student's points of view, and point out the tips and tricks I learned. Equally, I hope to learn and develop my lessons as I gain more experience working with different students.
I find using whiteboards to be extremely effective, and enjoy personalising problems to help students grasp concepts more easily.
A typical lesson may involve:
- a question or puzzle to provoke thought, or an example of a real-life problem where the topic to be studied is relevant;
- an introduction to the concept, recapping previous learning in order to help connect lessons together;
- an example problem, walked-through at a pace the student is comfortable with;
- a series of problems increasing in difficulty, to encourage the student to form independent ideas and trust what they think;
- a return to the initial question, which the student should now be able to make steps towards answering;
- a summary of the lesson's learning, and any further tasks which may be recommended to improve understanding.
