RE: Online Secondary Mathematics Tutor
I would like to be considered for the posts of Online Secondary School Mathematics tutor. A copy of my CV is attached which shows that I possess the qualities, relevant qualifications and experiences for such a position.
Qualification
I obtained a BSc (Hons) Degree in Engineering earlier in life. In September 1999 I enrolled at the Goldsmiths College, University of London, and successfully completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE – Maths), leading to the award of a Qualified Teacher Status on 1 August 2000. While at my first post as a Mathematics teacher, I successfully completed a one-year Induction period in accordance with Statutory requirements. For the rest of my teaching career, I attended both internal and external INSETS on programmes.
Experience
In the UK, my first appointment was to a Comprehensive School, St. Catherine’s RC School for Girls, Bexleyheath, where I taught mixed groups and Top as well as Bottom sets. My students made tremendous progress through the teaching and learning styles I adopted. I took keen interest in Lunch Time and After School activities, and contributed to raising standards by participating in various non-time tabled programmes including teaching in Summer school, organising Saturday Booster classes, and teaching on GCSE and AS/A2 Easter Revision Programmes.
I have also taught in a Selective School, Townley Grammar School for Girls, where I taught Maths across KS3, KS4 and KS5. In the Sixth Form, I have taught both the Core and Applied Maths Units. In my final full teaching year before leaving, 90% of our students achieved A-C grades (83% at A-B). My personal contribution to these record-breaking results was tremendous. I taught Statistics and the Core Units. The results were the best on record. My achievements with GCSE groups are equally outstanding. The GCSE results showed some 99.6% achievement at A* -C grades of which my contribution was my ability to motivate low ability pupils to achieve excellent grades. I also taught on various Non-Time Tabled programmes including Summer school, Booster Classes and AS/A2 Easter Revision classes.
In my last UK job at Hackney Community College, I taught on various Maths programmes including AS/A2 Maths, BTEC and GCSE Maths. As the GCSE Maths Coordinator, I saw pass rates increase gradually from 29% A* - C grades in 2008 when I took up the role to 37% A* - C grades in 2009 and to 54%
A* - C grades in 2010 and 61% A* - C grades when I was leaving in 2013. I have been responsible for the planning and review of the Schemes of Work as well as encouraging the use of ICT and other latest technologies for improving efficiency and effectiveness in using resources and achieving outcomes.
Middle Management Experience
I have been head of the Physics Department at Saint Andrew’s International School, Blantyre, Malawi for six years where I have been commended for my non-confrontational leadership by former Head teacher, Gordon Benbow, leading to a well organised department. In my current post, I am in my second year as Head of the Mathematics Department where I have introduced relevant modern technologies into the curriculum, thereby raising standards. I have been a Sixth Form Tutor for most of my teaching career in the UK, and Saint Andrew’s and also for my time now at Rainbow International School. I have helped students with their University applications and I have clear understanding of what students need to be successful with their A Level studies. I believe I have the skills and experience to lead a successful Sixth Form
.
Subject Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
I have a sound understanding of recent developments in Mathematics Education. This has enabled me to model good practice in assessing students, keeping record of students’ achievement, setting individual, group and whole class targets in line with both Departmental and Whole School improvement Plan and the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda. I also have a clear understanding of Departmental Self Evaluation, enabling me to contribute effectively towards raising achievement. I have good knowledge of systems and processes which provide for effective and meaningful assessment that is so vital in raising standards. I have worked with my colleagues as a team in various ways, including sharing good practice, recognising and using latest research on different learning styles, the development of resources, using assessment data for planning lessons towards raising standards, and using results from student tracking systems to apply timely corrective measures for under-achieving students.
Equal Opportunities
As a teacher, I believe in fostering a learning environment where every child matters. I believe that students, irrespective of their social circumstances, have the ability to achieve and the teacher must have a clear focus on individual pupil needs in order to improve provision and thereby raising standards. I do this by involving, empowering, mentoring and coaching my students as a group or individually.
I believe that my experience in Middle Leadership and Mathematics teaching across the curriculum as well as my track record in raising students’ achievements puts me in a position to succeed if I am appointed Online Tutor.
I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application with you further and I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Narkotey.
