The biggest motivation for my desire to teach guitar is because of the private tuition that I received throughout school, prior to moving to music college. I am fully aware of the impact that a positive learning environment created by an enthusiastic and supportive teacher can have on someone and, in turn, I consistently look to provide this to other learners.
I often refer to the content and syllabus that I was taught to provide a framework for what I teach as I believe that it was strongly effective. This comprises of reinforcing the fundamental technical aspects of the guitar and necessary music theory with enjoyable pieces for the student to learn and play along to, not only maintaining their interest whist developing their ability but also exposing them to a wide variety of genres. Additionally, I am a firm believer in granting the student a voice in pathing their own learning journey in order to allow for maximum enjoyment. In most cases, this involves periodically asking the student to bring in a piece/ song of their choice into the lesson to learn. As someone who is passionate about writing music, I also provide many opportunities and projects that allow the student to express their artistic voice, should they wish to do so. For example, one project consists of implementing what the student has recently learnt about minor keys to create a chord progression in a minor key before writing a series of guitar licks and lead lines to record over the top.
