This is the format I would use if I was teaching simultaneous equations to a GCSE student: Background Understanding and Theory (5-15 mins):
Set small tasks related to topic to ensure they have the basic knowledge of topic: Providing operation problems with negative numbers Setting linear algebra solving problems Substitution problems
Verbally explain the methodology: The aim is to cancel out one of the two missing variables Will allow us to find the value of one of the variables We can use substitution to find the other missing variable
Give scenarios where using this method would be useful: Simultaneous equations are useful when we are missing the value of two variables Pen and Pencil combined cost problem Finding P.O.I. of two linear expressions
Worked Examples (10-20 mins): Myself and the student will go through 2-4 questions together step-by-step to improve their understanding of how we ended up with that answer There’ll be less input from my end as we do more questions together so that they feel more comfortable doing them on their own
Attempt Questions on their own (20-25 mins): Student will attempt questions of varying difficulty independently, with aid given being used to point them in the right direction if lost instead of leading to the answer Independent questions will be routinely marked to ensure the student is doing the correct working out to prevent bad habits being instilled
