For adults who have low competencies in English, I will use the primary school curriculum as a guide to what they need to know. This will be in addition to everyday vocabulary that they would require both indoors and outdoors. The lessons will be interactive to ensure that the learners participate in the teaching and learning process. There will be a lot of dramatization to enhance their understanding of the topic and oral compositions will be encouraged to boost their level of confidence to speak English wherever they find themselves.
With my experience in teaching, I have realized that a learner-centred approach allows the learners to feel in control of their learning, though one cannot rule out the constant guidance of the tutor. I will encourage the learners to read very simple and easy-to-read literature as soon as they are able to construct simple sentences and understand basic verbs. Most of the teaching will be oral at the onset because writing will make the process too formal, tedious, and discouraging. The learners need to be a bit confident, at least, before they will be asked to start writing, depending on their entry-level.
The use of instructional materials cannot be over-emphasized because the learners will retain the knowledge gained from being able to attach a name to an object or a pictorial scene of everyday life. It will also be important to consider the need of the learners in order to guide them better. For instance, though similar, the need of a market trader will differ from that of a retail store attendant. One could be an employer and the other an employee.
