In my lessons, I like to combine numerous teaching methods. I believe strongly that to learn a language well, you need to speak, write, listen and engage with material in that language that genuinely interests you. In other words, you need to build your knowledge and proficiency, but you also need to find what motivates you as an individual to learn that language. It might be that you want to able to write to your friends in English, or that you want to watch TV shows without subtitles.
Whatever it is that motivates a student, I like to see this as the key into learning, and therefore support them by providing recommendations on books to read, TV shows to see, films to consume and podcasts they can listen to. I am an avid reader and in my other job I work in TV/Film, so I have a good knowledge of creative content that exists.
In my lessons, I like to encourage the student to practice reading out loud, as well as conversing with me spontaneously and completing writing exercises. In addition, a good grasp of the grammar underlying the language is important, but the degree to which I focus on this varies entirely with the needs of the student and the level they are already at. I will endeavor to always match their individual level and requirements, helping them learn and improve fluency and accent, whilst making sure that they enjoy the process!
