I have experience teaching English to a couple of middle school students helping them to improve their speaking and grammar skills, building their confidence, helping with homework and preparing them for English classes in school. Through my experience, I have learnt that focusing on reviewing content that needs practice and filling in any language gaps before teaching new content is key. Students of a younger age sometimes need more encouragement to use English so in every lesson the class is in full English, which simultaneously improves their listening and conversation skills. Each lesson is designed for the student, their English level, the intent of learning English and also the age of the student. For students who are also learning English at school, I try to create lessons that complement their school’s syllabus. However, in all classes, I aim to spend time practising each language skill, review and revise content, provide examples to show how content is applied in different scenarios and teach cultural-based aspects of English such as colloquial phrases to improve their level of fluency. Where necessary, I set little homeworks to ensure that the student has guidance in their learning whilst not distracting or adding pressure to their school homework. I believe that whilst language learning is something that requires hard work and constant dedication it likewise requires some fun to motivate and build confidence. Therefore, I try to make classes about the student participating not just listening, as language is of course an interactive subject.
