Normally when covering a new topic in maths i start with basic theory and principle.
(i have endless tutored plenty of struggling students in the last year and have endless patience for explaining the basics)
This is then followed by some very easy questions just to cement the knowledge.
Once you have nailed this then we can start to develop your understanding.

We do this by working through more difficult problems together, which i try to make more exciting through interesting context to questions and games.
The last thing to do if you don't just want to learn maths for maths sake, is to learn exam technique and tricks to nail your exams and tests.
some resources i have: i have every maths textbook under the sun but also own two books dedicated to putting maths into silly context to make it more interesting. For younger kids i try to use Kahoot and Socrative to reinforce knowledge.
