I have experience volunteering as a GCSE Maths Tutor. My approach to tutoring is structured and comprehensive, characterised by a well-defined lesson plan encompassing various components. I like creating PowerPoints for each lesson I deliver during tutorials. Before the tutorial session commences, I message the student with a short introductory message and attach the PowerPoint presentation. This allows students to view the contents of the presentation both during and after the session, thereby enhancing their access to the material.
Each session is initiated with a 5-10 minute introductory activity, serving to engage and prepare the students for the main instructional segment. This period involves a review and discussion of the previous week's homework, followed by a concise mini-activity. The core of the session comprises a 45-minute main activity, during which I introduce the topic, provide background and teach methods to tackle the questions. I encourage active participation by assigning practice questions, guiding them and fostering a supportive learning environment. In the concluding five minutes of each session, I allocate students 20-30 minutes of homework and also dedicate this time to discussing the upcoming week's lesson. Allocating homework serves as a valuable tool for reinforcing learned maths concepts and allowing students to develop their proficiency in specific topics. Prior to mock exams, I like to dedicate tutorial session focused on students weak areas and motivate them to do practice papers.
I believe structured and engaging learning experience promotes a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. My teaching approach has yielded positive outcomes in the progress of the students I have had the opportunity to mentor.
