I will spend the first lesson asking the student what their goal is? And how they learn best e.g. Through pictures, written or conversation. The lessons will consist of a preliminary starter (warm up) where we will also set the lesson objectives. The main body of the lesson will vary depending on what is being taught, I do like the very inclusive approach where once the student is a little more confident in their spoken English I try to get them to lead a little more. In the conclusion I get them to present what they have learnt and we revisit the objectives that were set at the beginning and talk through whether they feel if they've met the objectives.
I find that working at the pace of the student is always best, quality learning is very important to me, I do repeat lessons where I feel the student hasn't reached the gaol set. There's a better chance of a language sticking if practice and consistency is there. And the end of each lesson we also have a conversation on what they found helpful in that lesson and what we can do better next time. With basic English I really do go back to the basics and that is simple greetings and conversational lines, we then explore conversational lines were you can use varied words ect. For higher level English proficiency we look at simple words and how they can be replaced with enhanced words, just to give you and example. We look at thought provoking questions to allow free flow answers from students. Grammar is taught once there's a basic grasp the English Language.
