I like to start off with a meeting prior to the first session just to discuss how the potential student likes to learn, as everyone learns in their own way. In the past I have had students that have been told by teachers that they need a little more support in certain areas, and are given specific topics and resources to work through. I have also had some students that are very capable and have grasped the concepts well, but just need a confidence boost to help them achieve their goals. Normally, in my lessons I like to identify what topics we are planning on working through in that session, and then go over a brief summary of the topic to work out which parts require more depth and explanation. Following that, I normally go through some examples working with the student, and then let them work through some questions on their own. This ensures that the student is confident in the topic, and if they run into any difficulties, they know that there is a safe environment for them to ask any questions.
