I taught AS level Sociology at a comprehensive school with a sixth form college and have taught this subject and related subjects in many other different settings and contexts since 2005 albeit informally. I am very conscientious in terms of how I engage and interact with students. For example, I always aim to maintain a healthy balance between affirming and praising a student and will ask open questions about issues that need working on. Open questions about issues that need working on I find are neutral enough to not be overly strict nor over passive. I listen with interest, have respect for each person, accept each ones' uniqueness of input, give grades and write comments on written work. I am very easy going but assertive with balance. I treat people as I would like to be treated which is a core value of mine. Discovering an individuals best learning style is important to me so I like to establish this early.
I aim also to balance teacher centred methods (explaining, questions, show and interact) with active and student centred methods for assignments, private study and homework etc. Active methods might include discussion, games, film clips, quizzes, challenges etc.
To elaborate on how I explain for example, I aim to include information that is logically ordered and concise by also summarising and emphasising important points. I explain also trying to build on existing knowledge each student already possesses.
