I like to gather information from the students before starting about which topics they would like to cover, and then plan my lessons accordingly. I normally go through one or two topics per lesson, though this may vary depending on the student and the topic. I like to first give the student an overview of the topic I am about to teach, and try to gauge the level the student is working at, before moving on to doing questions. I prefer to focus the majority of the lesson on problem solving, as I feel it is the most effective way to teach Maths, though I am always receptive to student feedback and I am prepared to tailor the lessons to the students preferences.
I generally start each lesson with a short quiz, summarising the topics covered in the previous week to track the student's progress and ensure they have understood, and I use this to determine whether to move on to a different topic or continue with a topic from the week before.
I have been tutoring for 4 years now and I have tutored a range of different students of different abilities. I have learned to appreciate different learning styles and have adapted my ways of explaining things successfully over the years. I love being able to see students progress and understand topics that they may have struggled with before. I hope to be able to continue teaching and see more students reach their full potentials and gain a deeper appreciation for Maths.
