My teaching style is open, flexible and conversational.
I generally structure my lessons as closely around my students' specific needs as I possibly can. The first session is almost always purely diagnostic. I like to talk to people I teach for and get a good gauge of their abilities and where they think they struggle, as well as set them some basic work to see what they do with it.
After that, most of the work I set tends to be thoroughly personalised, I often make resources with specific people and learning goals in mind and I have a slight preference - if the student can handle it - for setting work that is just a bit harder than is comfortable and then talking people through it to help push them. This is particularly true for very able students. I both ask a lot of questions and encourage asking a lot of questions as I find it best to get people to think around a subject rather than simply ingest knowledge.
I do not mind how long it takes someone to grasp something, I will keep trying different approaches until they grasp it. My student's needs come first and foremost in all situations. My sessions sometimes have a looser and less structured feel than those of other tutors due to the flexible nature of the way I teach, but that does depend on who I'm teaching in question.
