One of the less apparent answers is that communication is the basis of all relationships, and relationships are essential to life. All living things need relationships to survive and thrive – humans most of all. A more obvious (and less philosophical) answer to the question is that being able to write and speak English well will help you to find work, and working is as vital to living as relationships are.
