In my lessons I like to use different examples to tailor the learning to the specific needs of the student. I tend to go through examples in great detail whilst eliciting key steps from the student. Then, using my models, I will get the student to have a go at their own example and observe through each stage and interjecting where appropriate in order to tackle any misconceptions. If I appropriate, I will look to challenge students with a variety of different questions that take different angles on a topic to further develop their understanding.
Between lessons, I set work related to the sessions to consolidate any learning that has taken place. The key component to developing mathematical understanding is repetition and practice so this is very important. I usually ask for homework to be submitted to me 24 hours before the next session so I can look through it and pick out key points to go into more detail in the following lesson.
I do both in person and online lessons (using Zoom). In person, I like to use mini whiteboards to practice and any information that may be of use can be written into a notebook for the student to refer back to whenever they want. On Zoom, I use the built in whiteboard to capture all of the work in that lesson which I convert into a PDF to send to the student after the lesson.
