I keep my teaching methods simple, sitting to the left of the student because I am right handed so they can see what I am writing or drawing. I also recommend 2 hour lessons with a short break in the middle because a one hour lesson in maths doesn't allow enough time to fully explain and work through examples. 2 hours soon flies past because I make my lessons fun and interesting

I use simple teaching aids - coloured lollipop sticks to teach younger children to count, tissue boxes to explain dimensions, perimeters and areas and even choc-chip brioche buns to explain the addition or subtraction of fractions! The advantage of this last one is that the student can eat the teaching aid once they understand the maths involved!!

If a student asks me a question which I can't immediately answer, I won't bluff - I will take the question away and come back with the answer the next time I see them.

Most of my new students are referred to me by word of mouth from grateful students or parents. One of my most successful incidences of private maths tuition was my own son, who was predicted by his maths teacher to achieve only 10% in his GCSE at intermediate level. I gave him private tuition for 2 x 2 hours per week and he achieved 97% in his exam.
