I believe in teaching the language in conjunction with what interests the student, that way they’re more likely through emotional learning and understanding to retain the information with minimal effort.
I was fortunate enough to see this in action through creating the content for the Ukrainian based ESL and culture sharing app EMERY.
As their director and content creator, I was able to see how students, by making emotional connections were, on average, much more likely to achieve fluency in the way the language is actually spoken by native speakers.
My format varies depending on the level of the student. For more advanced students we would converse over more complicated issues, such as climate change, politics, social media gossip (whatever the interest of the individual is). For beginners we would take a similar approach, however, we would be focusing more on vocabulary and simple sentence structure and ‘why’ we use that structure.
My experience as a teacher has predominantly been in the music industry as a vocal coach, however, through my experience working with foreign music artists (mainly from Italy and Brazil) I have been fortunate enough to give casual English lessons, whilst also acting as translator to aid the recording process.
It is through my real world experience of using the language that I believe I can help, unlike apps such as Duolingo which teach you obscure statements like ‘the rat chases the cat with the cheese,’ I will be teaching you have to usefully apply the language to real life situations you will 100% find yourself in.
