Depending on the student needs and experience, I will put together a specific course.
Firstly I would run through a general description of graphic design, what it is and how it has changed over the last 30 years. A lot of design terminology originates from the print process and I think it is important to understand why and what those terms mean.
I would start with the basics of the apps within Adobe Creative Suite and what they are designed to do. I would encourage students to create their own examples and offer ways to improve their work.
As an artist I'm a great believer in sketching out ideas first before sitting at a computer. The current selection of available design software is extremely good, especially with the growth of AI, but it is important to realise that it is not a designer and never will be. A computer can only do what it is programmed to do and my job is to point out the best way to approach an idea and the most effective way to create any particular project.
I would focus on designing posters, leaflets, digital adverts, photo-retouching, digital illustration and eventually put together a brochure and prepare it to be printed.
As I said at the beginning, this is dependent on the students experience and certain parts may be replaced with lessons that are more relevant to a particular age and experience. It may be helping to put together a portfolio to apply for further education, or simply to branch out as a freelance designer.
