When I teach, I like to use different techniques to engage the student. For example if I’m doing reading and answering questions, I take turns with the student reading the passage. After wards, I’ll show the student to apply critical thinking to eliminate wrong answers and find the right one. I do this by going to the questions one by one and comparing each answer against the passage and discussing it with the student. I’ll do this for several passages until the student becomes comfortable.
For math questions, I’ll use techniques that are established and even ones that worked personally for me. For example if I’m teaching expressions, I’ll use PEMDAS for the order of operations. In some cases like in the case of quadratic equations, I’ll teach my students the ABC formula to solve problems that they otherwise wouldn’t have learned at their level unless I introduced it to them.
For other subjects like Chemistry, I’ll encourage my students to be strategic and show them the way to be successful in that particular subject. For Chemistry, I believe the skill of memorization and good background of Mathematics are necessary. For this class, I’ll strengthen their foundation first because in order to be successful in the future they need good base which is also true for the subjects discussed above. So for example, I’ll build their foundation by making them memorize nomenclature, formulas and so on. I’ll will take the time to personally do this as having someone to practice with makes the difference.
