My approach towards tutoring has always been to encourage the student to feedback on content they are struggling with. Rather than just sit and talk for 60mins to their face, I will have a discussion with them about the topic, then encourage them to feedback to me in their own words. A great way of testing your understanding is how well you can explain ideas to other people!

Learning should never be seen as an intimidating environment, where only the brightest can thrive. Science by its very nature is how we understand the physical, chemical and biological world around us - if these things occur in real life...then they can always be understood with a bit of time and dedication!
