I can teach primary school students looking to learn how to pass their SATs anything they seem to be struggling with, first I will ask the parents if there is anything their child is struggling with, then the student. If they aren't so sure I will take them through a mock paper and find their weak points, and teach them easy to remember techniques and shortcuts which rely on your basic and intuitive understanding of the ideas presented. This will not only help them answer these questions but it will give them a better fundamental maths understanding in the future, making their transition into GCSEs smoother and much easier.
I am extremely patient with students, I try to understand exactly where the problem is when it comes to a lack of listening or subject understanding and find creative and effective ways to help. A prime example of a subject students struggle with is the concept of BIDMAS, (brackets, indices, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction), the way I teach this order of operations is explaining it backwards, one letter at a time, going backwards from subtraction, and giving example questions to the students.
I make a point to never make a student feel judged for not understanding, and proud for forming an understanding of something new, when a student feels intelligent they begin to have fun with the subject they are doing, I aim to make maths rewarding for kids learning their SATs, and help them find just how fun maths really is.
