I balance my lessons between two different styles; in some lessons, I teach instructively, talking to the student about the content and occasionally testing their knowledge and engagement to help them learn effectively, with tools such as periodic quizzes and example questions or references to sources or real-world news events. In other lessons, I set the student a task to take the lead on, such as a past paper question, source analysis or essay planning, with real-time support and assistance from myself as the tutor to complete the task and remind the student of the required knowledge to complete it to a high standard.
In lessons, I am friendly and approachable; I like my students to feel that that can always interject to ask questions or make a point, because the main purpose of my lessons is to advance the student's knowledge, understanding and engagement, which is always best achieved through their active participation. Similarly, I encourage my students to draw on their own knowledge or interests to advance the lesson and further their understanding, such as through reference to current events.
Over the long term, my lessons broadly follow the format of the curriculum for the subject, but this format is always adjusted to allow for the student's own needs - if a student is struggling with a topic, we will spend as much time as is necessary perfecting their knowledge and understanding of the topic at hand, and similarly topics a student is strong in can be deferred for those they struggle with. I also take care to incorporate lessons on exam preparation, essay planning and general revision, all with the aim of maximising the student's ability and final grade.
