My typical lesson plan tends to begin with teaching the concept and engaging with the student. I usually set questions based on the work for us to cover within the lesson and the following lesson I will begin by recovering a past topic and testing with short fire questions. This allows me to see if the student has engaged with content in the previous lesson and if that method of teaching was suitable for them. I will begin by working through some of the questions together and then allow the student to work independently to see if they have grasped the concept. If I can sense a student is finding it challenging, I will switch up the teaching strategy until I have found what suits them best. My typical strategies include using diagrams, colour and introducing them to songs/sayings that will help them learn key concepts. It is easy to pick up when a student has learnt something when you ask them to solve something on their own, I do this in a supportive environment alleviating any pressure they may feel. I will measure progress by setting small tests at the end of each topic to highlight any strengths and any improvements needed. I believe that praise and encouragement are vital to my students’ success as it induces a positive learner. I always end each session by asking the student what they would like more support with in the future, what they believe they have learnt and what they feel more confident in.
