I have been a private tutor for the past 4 years and have experience in tutoring children from the age of 10-18 in mathematics and sciences. Lessons are tailored to specific age groups and to each individual student. For students studying for GCSE/ A-level exams, the main focus will be on exam technique and understanding how to answer questions using keywords and methods, employing various types of past paper questions from all exam boards to develop as much experience and confidence as possible. There will also be a focus on "learning how to learn" in separate sessions, to ensure independence in learning techniques, outside of 1:1 tutoring. The aim of this is to ensure that students don't rely on tutoring as their only form of revision, but instead are able to use these methods in their own time and have discipline and motivation to learn by themselves as well.
All lessons start with a quick activity to grasp what the student knows already about the topic, before moving on to a guided learning session during which the students learn the main concepts while answering questions throughout as a test of their understanding. Plenary activities will include "exam-style" questions. Homework will include activities based on the current session and some challenge questions from previous sessions. After every 5 sessions there will be a mini test during which the student will be able to showcase their understanding of what they have learned. We will then go through each of the questions together and target following sessions on the student's weak areas.
