Teaching Philosophy Statement
To my mind, teaching philosophy is an elucidation of a teacher’s values and beliefs concerning teaching. Teaching philosophy is often an amalgamation of methods we studied in college or graduate school and lessons learned during any professional experience since then. It varies from teacher to teacher.
Teaching is the main rewarding characteristic of my professional career and the outward appearance of my personality as a university instructor. No doubt, I deem the accomplishment I have benefited from and enjoyed in the classroom to be my sole maximum input to the mission and vision of my campus and the University. Teaching invigorates me and I strive to share my love and passion for teaching and of my discipline with my students. If they sense my presence, it makes my students more likely to be encouraged, by what I feel. I ignore learning for the sake of learning and believe in fun learning as per the situation. I also strongly believe that effective teaching involves a mutual and synergistic liaison between the students and the instructor. I have high expectations for both myself and my students; they push me and in lieu, I push them, all in a mutually reverent manner. I have a number of objectives and desired outcomes that guide my choice of pedagogy. My primary aim is for my students to take control of their education. I consequently witness my role as one of the mentors and guides. Socrates, the Greek philosopher appeals to me a lot and for this reason, much of my teaching takes the form of Socratic questioning. The Socratic Method is beneficial because it promotes students’ engagement with the course material by fostering critical thinking and reflection.
