In my lessons, I will often ask the student in advance to let me know which topic they would like to focus on. This allows me to prepare relevent content and exam questions.
We will go through the theory first, if possible, I try to let the student "teach me", to test their understanding and to identify potential improvements. If this is not possible I will teach the content, with effort on making it as engaging as possible. This is often with visual aids, such as diagrams, or drawing out biological processes step by step with the student.
Once the student is satisfied with the theory and content, we will move to exam questions. First the student will answer them. Then I will give corrections and ideas on what could be added to their answer. Finally, we will go through the mark scheme together to ensure a thorough understanding of what the examinator is looking for. I believe this is the best method of teaching as GSCEs and A levels have tricky wording and phrases that must be learnt and understood in order to excell.
I will also push for students to keep notes of any questions they have between sessions, which can be sent at any point to me and I will prepare answers and follow up exam questions in the subsequent session.
Of course, every student is different, so the lesson plan is heavily flexible and dependent on the students themselves. Some learn better in lecture style tutorials, some learn better with a more collaborative seminar style method. The lessons themselves will change and grow with time as we work together to find the best method suited.
