I have 8 months experience tutoring Chinese in Singapore to students aged 14 and 15 of the Basic and Intermediate levels. During this time, I:
- Aided students’ learning and grasp of language through constant repetition in reading and writing, increasing their exposure to the language
- Assessed their schoolwork and provided further help to improve their language proficiency and exam-taking techniques
- Provided on-the-spot translations from Chinese to English to aid them in understanding the given text in worksheets, workbooks, and textbooks.
- Introduced students to the rich cultural aspects of the Chinese language, including traditions, customs, and history.
- Created a culturally immersive learning environment to deepen students' understanding and appreciation.

A typical 1 hour lesson with me would look like this:
- 10 mins revision of last week's terms
- 5 mins spelling
- 20 mins reading time (includes on the spot translations and explanations)
- 5 mins break
- 20 mins reading time and review of new terms (includes on the spot translations and explanations)

I strongly believe that constant repetition and exposure to the language will help students to improve fluency. Hence, I have tailored my lessons to always repeat and review terms learned during the reading sessions. The homework I set usually comprises of writing practice: to repeat writing the same phrases for 10 times so as to build the muscle memory for that specific term or phrase. I believe that repeatedly writing the same term will help students remember the complex Chinese characters and enable them to write well and fast without the help of dictionaries or online sources all the time.
