I like to work on a good sound and technique, more than just progress through tunes in a book, because if you invest time on your technique then playing tunes will come naturally. So we'll probably spend some time on scales and other exercises, though always trying to transfer everything to a musical piece, as that is, at the end of the day, what we're here for!
Just like we learn to talk way before we learn to read and write, I tend to spend plenty of time at the beginning just working on listening, making a good sound, and developing a good musical ear, before getting into musical notation.
I myself have been studying the instrument (first violin, then passed on to viola) for over 18 years. I've been through different styles of tutors, played in different settings, attended to a diversity of seminars as well as getting half way through a music teaching degree in Argentina, before having to leave it on hold to come to the UK. I havn't had as much teaching experience as I have had playing and learning, but I've recently started tutoring and I'm excited to start passing on everything I've received myself.
Whether you want to work through the grades or just learn to play the fiddle with a good, musical sound, I hope I can be a helpful tutor to see you through to new musical horizons!
