When I teach, I meet the students where they are in their educational journey. I build trust and rapport first. I believe that students learn best from somebody who knows the subject but also enjoys the subject. I've been teaching and/or tutoring online since before Covid hit, so I'm well versed in the difficulties presented by remote learning, but I have also built up a large arsenal of tools and tricks to teach fluidly online.
While subject matter competency is the goal, the path to competency might take many detours. If, in a lesson, a question comes up that may not appear to be related, I will take that detour. Some how, the connection was already there for the student, so if strengthening the connection through the exploration of a side topic is needed, that's what I'll do. I'm a very big believer in the student directing their learning - to an extent. In mathematics, each concept builds upon another. This isn't necessarily true in history or English Language Arts, so exploring those connections can be a valuable use of our time and energy.
I believe that no matter our ages or our education levels, we all have much to learn from one another. Teaching is my passion, learning is my life. I would love to go on a new learning journey with you!
