I normally use articles and multimedia to introduce topics to students then we discuss the topics. I believe that the best way to learn how to speak is to actually speak. I correct the grammar and vocabulary as we speak and when I discover language gaps I give homework which covers those areas and include the weaknesses in the next class. This ensures that I don't teach my students what they already know because this can reduce motivation if you feel yoh are not learning anything. I am a firm beliver in setting realistic goals and milestones so my students have a target to keep them motivated. When it comes to teaching pronunciation, i habe discovered that breaking the word into its vowel sounds and sounding them out individually is a good way to learn to say words correctly. For students who want to learn English for proficiency tests, i believe in going through the test together to get an outline of the test then learning the language forms and structure rather than memorizing the answers because when questions are changed students tend to get stuck. I believe in teaching students how to break down a question into its elements and working out what it is asking for. In my experience most students fail proficiency exams because they don't understand the questions not because they cannot speak the language. I am also a firm believer in immersion into a language when we learn. Focus on exposing your self to the language as much as possible and practice outside the lessons.
