Primary School ------
I have experience working with students aged 5 - 11 in a range of settings. As an Ambassador for Physics for Queen Mary University of London, I delivered a series of in school workshops on the topic of space to various primary schools and year groups. The workshops were aimed to be inclusive for children with visual impairments, introducing concepts such as scale using tactile objects, and the results in their understanding were excellent. Through piano tuition I gained experience with two five year old girls, Adah and Jude (see below) and as a Music Assistant for the Lewisham Music Service, I supported children aged six and above.
- Adah (5 - 6 years old), Piano Tuition, Music: Adah showed great natural talent in piano. Together we worked on improving coordination in both hands, stepping up her playing to the next level, and accessing much more challenging repertoire than she was able to prior to our progress. We practiced focus and structured learning, enabling her to make the most of rehearsals and the time in between. By the end, Adah had become very adept, and did a wonderful job at the small performances she put on for her parents, playing fluently without pauses or repeats.
- Jude (5 years old), Piano Tuition, Music: Jude was a complete beginner, keen to learn piano, and very musically minded. In our lessons we started from scratch, developing her aural skills by copying back phrases on the piano and utilising the correct fingers to solidify good technique from the get go. Alongside this, we began with the basics of learning to read music. By the end of our time together, Jude was able to correctly identify all the right notes on a stave, including sharps and flats.
Secondary & GCSE ------
As a Physics and Maths tutor, I supported Ridah through her GCSEs, ultimately achieving a grade 8 in Physics (higher than her predicated grade), which she was proud very of. In my current role as the Trainee Tutor for the London Youth Folk Ensemble, it is my job to support children and young people aged (up to the age of 24 for SEND students) to work together to reach their musical potential as a team, preparing for polished and professional performances throughout the year.
- Ridah (15 - 16 years old), Physics, Maths: Ridah was confident in chemistry and biology, but struggled much more with Physics. Our tutoring covered both Physics and Maths. In her case, I found it best to go over each topic before she was scheduled to encounter it in class. This allowed us to build a foundation of understanding before she went through it at school. She would then come to me with homework and problem questions, so as to ensure there were never any gaps in understanding, and to start building practice in answering exam style questions. As we approached the final exam, I trained Ridah on exam technique, and we delved into as many past papers as possible.
A level & IB ------
As mentioned previously, as the Trainee Tutor for the London Youth Folk Ensemble, I have worked with year old (up to the age of 24 for SEND students). I have also worked with young people aged as a Student Ambassador for Physics, by engaging future students through outreach events in schools across East London, and advocating for physics through Queen Mary Open Days, providing tours of campus, speaking with students and parents individually and also as part of a Q&A panel. At this stage in learning the content becomes increasingly interesting and as such, I am prepared and excited to take on A level and IB students.
------ Personal ------
I am an Astrophysics student but also a banjo and mandolin player. I love folk music, books, art and board games. Creative thinking is an incredibly valuable asset in all walks of life, including science. It is an essential tool for problem solving, and I encourage all my students to express themselves and develop their own approach to learning, as those at the forefront of progress are always the unique and creative thinkers.
I have been fortunate enough throughout my education to have encountered some truly excellent teachers. The common factor amongst all of them was their ability to motivate students. As someone who has absolutely been let down in the past by teachers failing to do this, I know what a difference it makes - especially in Physics and Maths, given how much about the world they explain. I will strive to ensure that even when topics are challenging, every subject remains interesting, because at the end of the day that is how students will be motivated to achieve top marks.
