Understanding the type of individual I am teaching is essential to accessing the difficulties they are facing. I will often try a variety of teaching techniques in order to fathom the most effective way of helping my students understand a subject/topic. While my guidance is important to keeping students on task and motivated, allowing students to have some choice and control over what happens in the session is actually one of the best ways to keep them engaged. I allow my students to choose the type of content/questions they want to tackle. I will encourage my students to send me work they have completed outside the session; be it a past paper or homework and offer them advice and feedback. My sessions are very much centred around the individual and their current needs and goals. I tend to begin by outlining established content or difficulties. I will then ask the student to in turn teach and explain to me the same concept/theories as I believe it is an authentic way to build confidence. I will always round up each session by addressing some questions e.g. past paper questions. This will ultimately prepare students further for examinations.
