During my time at Connie Rothman School, I taught English Literature, Language at a summer school, and English Literature/Language, Chemistry and Biology to students afterschool.
Whilst teaching classes of up to 15 students at summer school, I was able to greatly improve my confidence in public speaking and additionally present helpful constructive feedback to parents and children, allowing them to achieve growth and success in their upcoming exams. I taught classes with a range of different-aged students, which varied from year three to year eleven. This meant that creating a fun and educational atmosphere was key to collaborating with students - as a result of this, I work well with a variety of age groups and can often communicate as needed to avoid or solve conflicts. This job also required a creative aspect, as I was expected to plan lessons tailored to different age groups and topics, meaning I was constantly thinking and planning new methods to engage with children to allow them to learn to the best of their ability. I was expected to keep records of children's academic progress, set homework, and maintain communication with many parents regarding their child's individual progress.
I later moved to the afterschool programme, which allowed me to create more personalised and individual learning plans tailored to specific students. During this time, I taught English Lit/Lang to students of aged 8 to 16, and I taught Biology and Chemistry primarily to GCSE students. My role in this job consisted of maintaining a progress record of each student, planning and teaching personalised lessons, and providing homework and feedback on students' progress. This job required me to uphold excellent time management, communication skills and collaboration with staff in regard to student planning. Finally, working in afterschool also allowed me the opportunity to work with students who often did not attend school due to mental health difficulties and their special needs. Because of this, I have great problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as each individual may present different challenges or require unique strategies for their growth and development. Also, interacting with these individuals has helped me develop a deep sense of empathy and understanding towards their unique challenges and circumstances.
This experience has enhanced my ability to connect with others on a compassionate level.
