I have experience teaching all secondary students including GCSE students. The format I use for my lessons is where the student presents me with their subject's exam board I will then make a plan which includes the goals of each lesson and what we will achieve in that time so that if they are a GCSE student we know what to focus on. A lot of my teaching will be based on the specific spec. This will affirm that all of the learning is covered and consolidated in time for exams. The format I use is to start the lesson by reviewing the homework I have set and doing a starter which is based on the previous lesson to make sure the student remembers it. The main chunk of the lesson would be teaching the new content with intertwined questions and active recall questions. The last part of the lesson would be a timed exam question so that the student gets a feel of the real exam setting and the pressures of it. At to end of the lesson, I will set homework and ask the student if there's anything they want me to consolidate or go over, or if there's anything specific they want me to focus on in the coming lessons.
If your student is in KS1 and 2 I will still use the specification for their year group but the methods I would use are more active recall by asking questions throughout the whole lesson. I will also set homework to go over the next lesson to consolidate their knowledge.
