Since having only a year of teaching experience, I have dealt with a lot of students with a range of differing skills and attributes. For me, I worked with mostly students for GCSE's and secondary school status maths (KS4).
Before I start teaching anyone, it is super important for me to get to know you and how you are as a person because this allows for a secure, respective connection and a relaxed, stress-free atmosphere. This is just through having a normal conversation where I just ask you questions such as what is your name?, what are your favourite subjects?, do you have any hobbies?, things like that to get the ball rolling and to build a good bond straight from the get-go.
Typically, how I plan out my sessions is by assessing your knowledge first in the chosen topic/subject and generally just knowing where you are at. This helps me to understand you, your progress and your academic prowess. Secondly, from assessing your progress. I start to teach sections in the chosen topic/subject that you are not confident on by providing a fundamental knowledge lesson of how the topic (e.g. algebra) works and how it came. I believe that understanding the purpose/origin of something allows for easier comprehension of the technical and more tricky things. I also will give visual representations of topics on paper, digitally, whatever the preference and also give practice questions to understand if you have comprehened what I have taught. If not, I will be 101% willing to re-teach make the topic as clear as day
Finally once the session has ended, I will ask you what you have enjoyed, what you have disliked and what you think should be improved as I strive to teach to the best of my ability and make learning fun for all!
