I will usually collect expectation from parents and students in the first lesson, then run through some current assignment if any, if not then the most recent classroom lessson and test the knowledge and concept. I believe in do it by yourself. Most of the time I believe the best way out is through, and no framework or steps are the ultimate only answer; However, at times I do give framework or step-by-step to help student meeting the minimum requirement to get it out of the way to their true passion.
Sometimes, if the student confides his/her own wondering about life, I will share my experience and my point of view on matters, not to shape how the student sees the world but to provide a reference on some angles that is not in the textbook.
