As part of my job I am consistently using mathematics and statistics, and also coaching more junior team members which has helped me enhance my teaching skills. I have received GCSEs in both mathematics and statistics, and also a mathematics A-level.
While teaching I ask lots of questions, allowing the student to figure out the answer themselves using my direction. I find this helps the student remember the method more easily, and actually learn the skill rather than learn to pass the exam! This is also the way I learn best.
I am open to preparing detailed lessons around specific topics in advance, or simply going through matters that the student does not understand/difficult homework they’re struggling to complete.
From my experience, as both an informal tutor and a student being tutored, I have found that longer term relationships with the same tutor are the best way to develop a students understanding of a subject. However, I am also open to one-off lessons, either to deep-dive on a specific subject area that the student does not understand, or as last minute exam preparation.
I have found recently that I really enjoy teaching, whether this be at work or more informal tutoring for friends/family.
