In my experience, there is no singular best way to tutor students. Some are more responsive to learning by doing. Some are more responsive to walkthroughs, and some are more responsive to just watching and listening.
The way I would structure my tuition is by spending the first hour with the student working out which method of teaching works best. Then going forward I would base all my lessons around that. Any and all subsequent lessons I would begin by asking about what I went over in the previous session, and give the student 2-3 hand-crafted questions to see if they are able to apply my teachings.
Should the student be fully competent with the topic in question, I would then move on to the next one. Should the student require additional support, I shall provide it and continue working with them until they're able to beat any question on the topic.
At the end of each session, I will communicate with the student on if they require any help with understanding any topics their in-school teacher has previously taught, as well as being happy to help out with homework, without completing it for the student to ensure that they learn to do it themselves.
The content will be based on the exam board at the students current school, the topics they do/don't struggle most with. I am happy to complete in-person lessons (be it at the student's house, a coffee shop or somewhere else), or through an online video call.
