First of all, I establish with the student what they would like to learn. If it is a subject area that I have no experience in, I may have to say no. I want to be confident that I am giving you a lesson from a position of strong understanding and knowledge. I want to be confident that I will in turn be advancing your understanding and knowledge. Not just confirming to you what you already know.
If we agree on a subject area or topic to learn, I usually spend approximately two hours planning and researching for every hour taught, hence the price I charge. I believe planning in depth will give you a better quality lesson for each hour spent learning.
I like to use a slide show to outline key points and concepts, but I just use this as a prompt. I don’t believe in relying on slide shows for everything. I think there is a risk of trying to convey too much information at once and focusing on the screen rather than the words spoken.
For some classes, a slide show would not be appropriate. For example, if we are to have a debate practice, a slide show is less useful. Or for example, discussing and/or proof reading an essay, thesis or application.
I can deliver the lesson either online using a platform such as Zoom or Skype and sharing the slide show file with you if necessary. Alternatively, depending on distance, I am happy to teach in person.
I welcome students of all abilities, from those who need help with an introduction to a topic right up to those who want to become experts and may ask me difficult or thought provoking questions.
This will be your lesson, therefore I welcome any input you have on your preferred type of learning environment.
