These lessons aim to create a safe learning environment and build trust with the tutor through feedback, discussions, and participation in activities. Learning abilities and skills are consistently challenged, allowing students to achieve their self-esteem and self-actualization needs once they understand their progress and capabilities.
Inspired by Hattie's visible learning framework, this module follows a structured approach to discussing and achieving the learning outcomes by the end of each lesson. The lessons include demonstrations, information sheets, and explanations from me to help the students understand the objectives. Lessons also focus on reflecting on the students' progress. The student spends ample time playing the piano and attempting exercises, applying their knowledge through practical demonstrations. By the end of the lesson, the student should be familiar with the learning outcomes and encouraged to practice the material between lessons.
The first few lessons allow students to learn the fundamentals of music and piano/keyboard skills. My experiences and the current London College of Music piano examination syllabus have influenced the content and difficulty. I will address progress at the beginning of each lesson and evaluate the student's development during warm-ups. As the lessons progress, fundamentals are put into practice and tested through advanced playing styles, techniques, and learning pieces of music. Continuous assessment will be conducted through discussions, progress recaps, and performances of pieces.
I studied teaching practices, including pedagogic and andragogic teaching methods, in my final year at BIMM Institute and have designed lesson plans for various levels of education. By the end of the module, successful students should have learned essential scales, arpeggios, and rhythms, while also gaining an understanding of warming up, sight-reading, and applying feedback.
