My previous experience ranges from group mentoring to bespoke subject-specific seminars to one-on-one subject enrichment. As a result I recognise the importance of adapting the teaching to suit your needs. We will discuss what you’d like to get out of our sessions at the beginning, and plan them together accordingly. Usually, I’ll set challenging, stimulating and cutting-edge reading material in the student’s chosen subject area as a prompt for discussion, during which I’ll ask probing questions designed to push the student into more and more advanced ways of thinking, and help them gain confidence on the way. As part of the sessions I can also provide reading recommendations and guidance on the wider historiography to help the student enrich their understanding of the field through independent study outside the sessions. The more they engage, the more they will make use of the sessions. This method is ideally suited for university applications, which requires students to develop their own distinctive approach and area of expertise. It can also be combined with more direct preparation for specific assessments as necessary. I’m a friendly and open-minded tutor keen to make history an enjoyable and exciting subject of study.
