WHAT I TEACH

Breath Control

Control of the Sub-glottal and Supra-glottal air pressure.

Voice Development

I work together with artists to create a personal voice “toolbox” that teaches them techniques, supports their vocal freedom and guides them as they achieve their individual targeted goals.
- Mixed voice (finding the right balance between control and power through your range)
- Safe Belting
- Stamina increase
- Resonance
- Optimisation of Vocal Folds closure
- Thyroid Tilt (Cry)
- Tongue Control
- Soft Palate control (Oral vs Nasalised sound)
- False Vocal Folds control/ Release pressure on your Vocal Folds - Voice development through SOVT exercises (Tubes, straws, ...)

Vocal Health

Vocal health is often overlooked but can be easily implemented with the right knowledge about your particular voice, how best to hydrate your vocal folds, and adopting a good warm-up routine that is tailored to you.
I employ SOVT (Semi Occluded Vocal Tract) exercises in my coaching which goes far beyond voice development, by assisting with defining the best and healthiest movements for my clients when performing/ singing. This then results in the release of tension on the vocal folds and develops stamina.

Body awareness through vocal performance

I like to incorporate some Alexander technique exercises in my mentoring. By working on body awareness we ultimately develop vocal performance. It is important to understand the psychological impact that physiological attention brings to the table. Knowing how to use your body when performing will bring more ease when approaching the psychological aspect of singing.
Mentoring for live shows & Performance anxiety
We need to understand that singers are performers whose instrument resides within their body. I take into consideration the psychological and emotional characteristics of singing when developing a voice. My goal is to prepare artists to approach live performance with the correct mindset working in conjunction with technique and body language so that their vocal performance is fully optimised.
Artistic development
My intention and aspiration as a contemporary commercial vocal coach is to support singers in finding their voice and developing techniques to optimise vocal performance while retaining the individualism of their voice. Every voice is unique and it is important to not lose the distinctive essence of their artistry when training and developing.

About Me

I am a French-American voice teacher based in London UK. I started my career as a singer, guitarist and writer before forming an Alternative Rock band called RECKLESS JACKS. Over a span of a decade, we worked with many accomplished producers like Jim Lowe (Stereophonics), Julian Kindred (Ellie Goulding), and Bob Matthews (Alpines, had TV appearances, and performed over 80 shows in the UK and across Europe.

I have extensive experience as a musician, and bandleader and have worked with other artists on their development before my evolution into a trained vocalist and coach. I recognise the effort and obstacles faced when attempting to connect with our voices.

As a teenager, I was very involved in playing sports such as tennis. Participating competitively at such a young age taught me the importance and necessity of having the proper mindset when performing, and I try to make this the centre of my sessions.

Over the years, I have studied several recognised techniques that shaped my vocal training methods to both support an artist on their vocal journey and to be mindful of their individual needs so I can approach them with meaningful and authentic guidance.

As a voice teacher and vocal coach, I strive to keep myself up to date with new studies and research. I recently participated in a group research project with the Department of Speech, Voice & Swallowing at the Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester, and I am organising a seminar for voice teachers with SOVTs specialist Marci Rosenberg in December 2023.

"As singing is a process that goes beyond the voice, I consider my clients' mind, body, and spirit as I guide them through any performance anxieties, removing tension and developing live techniques.”
"Vocal training with Matt has been both fun
and rewarding! Matt’s understanding of the voice has massively helped me improve. His hands on approach to teaching and knowledge of technique has allowed me to move forward and gain confidence in my vocals. Also there’s never a dull moment with Matt!”

Tommy Hill - I Know I Know, (session musician)

‘For a long time i never thought i needed singing lessons because i was afraid it could change my approach my creativity and my process but Mathieu actually changed my vision! He upgraded my skills in a minute and helped me to be so much more comfortable and confident with my voice and the upgrade was crazy!’

Matt is a very professional teacher, he cares a lot about vocal health and is a very good listener. He adapts his method to each student and provides a very personal and efficient teaching. I’ve never been so proud of being a singer thanks to him!
