My lesson format is going to depend entirely on you! Over the years I have found some students prefer tightly-formatted lessons, others like to bring in work they cannot immediately complete, whilst yet more are driven to complete exam questions in person with me. I'm a huge fan of having both student and tutor cameras on, as at a distance it is the only way of getting meaningful feedback as to whether we are making progress together.
A typical session might include a review of what we did last session, and then a look at the work I set to be completed in the interim period. After that, we move on to the new topic agreed last session. It's really helpful if you read ahead on the new topic so we can quickly progress through teaching and understanding through to problem solving. This may be theoretical, or it may be programming in a live environment. Towards the end of the lesson, we can agree on some questions to be completed before the next session to cement the learning achieved. We will then agree on the topic for the next lesson, and I will direct you to some material to read before the next session.
Reading ahead is immensely valuable, as it gives you the learner an opportunity to check your own knowledge before the session. But don't think I won't test you on it! It's not about what you think you know, it's about what you really know and how to get you through those exams in the best possible shape.
