I take students from where they are, not from where I want them to be. I find out what they are looking to gain from a lesson and work towards achieving that in the time available, or (if time is too limited) set them on the path towards achieving it later on by themselves. I concentrate on one thing at a time, but will always seek to make links between disciplines that may aid the learning process - for instance, by combining elements of Music theory with performance, I can help students to understand the practical applications of what they are learning, and by drawing on a variety of musical literature including historical models, I can help students to better understand the underlying principles behind what they are learning.
I can offer lessons online using the customary means (Zoom, Skype etc.) and in those I can make use of PDFs and other resources to guide the student in lieu of books and paperwork that would be present in the room if they were with me in person.
Students are asked to bring notebooks in order to keep a record of topics covered, and in which tasks can be set to be worked on between lessons. Every lesson ends by asking the student what they feel they will remember most - what they have enjoyed, what they feel they have gained.
I use the ISM's Agreement for private tutoring and can offer lessons in groups, payable in advance with discounts offered for those who can demonstrate evidence of low income.
