I also understood that adding an experience around a word helps the memorising process. I invite the learner to join me in play role, free reading/loud reading. I even observed how babies watch their mother’s mouth when they speak to them. Being aware of what's going on in the mouth while we speak allow to break the ice and have a laugh but also relax too.
I believe that it takes 2 years as a rate of 2 hours per week. It takes determination and hard work and consistency. I can only guide you. You do the work.
The Tamagotchi method. When I first arrive as an au pair, I was trying to read in English. My first English book was ‘Murder at the Vicarage’ by Agatha Christie, my second was ‘Plain Tales from the Hills’ by Rudyard Kipling. I wish now that I had kept it, just as a clue of how much work, time, and effort I put in that reading. I used to read with a ‘Bic’ pen and a bilingual dictionary on the side.
I would read one paragraph underlining all the words that I could not use in my own vocabulary or that I would not understand.
I was looking for the words in the dictionary. I was writing it down alphabetically in French, in a notebook, on the right side, included in a sentence in English showing some meaning. Le soleil: The sun is yellow in the sky. It is common sense to work that way, as it is the way the brain works. I used this method with learners later and call the notebook a ‘Tamagotchi’ (feed it, entertain it, and care for it). Sure, I extended my vocabulary but don’t ask me about the plot of the book!
