In my lessons there is a balance of theory and practical teaching. I believe it is essential to ensure the child understands the basic principles of the topic they are studying before they are made to complete questions. In this element of the lesson I use a range of learning techniques based on the child's preferences and what type of learner they are. I then go on to present some questions to them which they complete with the help of my guidance. Once I see that the child is confident in the topic I allow them to attempt a series of questions independently which we then mark together to ensure that there are no gaps in the understanding of the child.
I firmly believe that a couple hours of tuition per week is a great first step in allowing the child to fulfil their potential however it is not enough and therefore I end all of my lessons with optional homework tasks which I highly recommend the child completes. I am also happy to send the answers to parents/ guardians so the work can be marked soon after completion and the child does not need to wait until our next session.
Following on from this, at the start of each session I allow for time to go through any mistakes the child made in their homework which they do not understand so they have a solid understanding of the topic before we move on. These methods have been successful for me in the past and allowed my students to work through topics they used to find complex and challenging
