The approach i use is to understand the language from the vast variety of cultural backgrounds and 'personalities' that each one of them have to offer, the goal is to create the most globalized use of spanish. Either if you plan to use it in debates or formal meetings, travelling around the world, having a chat with your mother-in-law, everything is possible if you understand the language from its very way to express different things in one way.

I do not tend to go too deep into grammatical structures, they tend to enlarge something that should be way more dynamic, vocabulary and consumption of the language is the key. Pop culture and modern issues are also a very nice way to punt you in diffferent scenarios so you do not end up with this unsatisfactory feeling of knowing what you want to say but not knowing a proper way to express it, anyone can ask for the location of the library, but not everyone can give their point of view.
