My classes are bespoke to your needs. We will work together to identify your strengths and areas for development, and how you want to learn.
Based on your interests and any areas you’re struggling, with we will put together a programme to target specific skills and knowledge, which can be linked to your work at school or entirely separate.
In lesson time we can prepare for coursework or exam questions, or read and analyse books, extracts and poems to improve your wider knowledge of English.
Based on over twenty years’ experience of what works well for students, my lessons usually follow a consistent format:
In most lessons we will recap prior learning, checking you can remember key knowledge, read new information together, and answer comprehension tasks.
New vocabulary will be defined and exemplified in order to make sure the reading is accessible.
We will look at models of good writing and construct responses together, before building up to independent work.
After completing writing tasks we will review together against the success criteria and identify areas for improvement.
I will then model good examples and show you how they are constructed, before you work independently to put it into practice.
We will spend much of the lesson time talking about the reading or writing you are doing, not only to ensure you understand it, but also to foster a love of English as discussing and debating the topic is part of the joy of the subject!
If you’re not confident with English don’t worry - your confidence will build with every lesson as you succeed in knowing more and being able to do more.
